ETHIOPIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ECUSTA): Its Research Arm - CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN RESEARCH & RETREAT CENTER (CFRRC)

Objectives

The Capuchin Franciscan Research and Training Center has two main objectives: 1) To promote research work in the field of Humanities, with a special focus on Classical and Ethiopian Literature, Philology, Philosophy and Theology. 2) To foster spiritual growth through spiritual retreats, Lectio Divina, counseling, on-going formation for priests, the religious, the laity and Franciscan studie.

Research

The Center organizes regular workshops, twice a month to study ancient and recent texts. National and International Conferences are also hosted by the research center, whereas, proceedings and research results are supposed to be published. The Center hopes to make research material available for researchers by, among other things, setting up a specialized library, with digital material at disposal for study.

CLASSICAL LITERATURE

The center encourages and facilitates the study of Classical literature. It has started translations, into Ethiopian languages, of classical texts in philosophy and theology, especially the writings of the Church fathers which are not already existent in Ge’ez.

Project of teaching ancient languages:

The center has started teaching G’eez (classical Ethiopic); in the coming years it will include language of literature of Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, Coptic and the literature of Ethiopian languages.

ETHIOPIAN LITERATURE

The center engages scholars and students interested in Ethiopian literature, both ancient (in Ge’ez) and modern. Philological and historical studies are given attention for the analysis of texts in Ge’ez.

Recent achievements and projects

- The center is preparing a concordance to the Ge’ez Bible to be published in several volumes; the work has been accomplished for a good percentage of the Bible; the whole work might be completed in 2015. After the Sacred Scriptures, concordances will prepared for other texts of Ge’ez literature, like patristic, liturgical and of other literary genres.

- The textual history will of the Ge’ez Bible is another major area of interest. So far studies have been carried out on the Book of Psalms and the Book of Sirach (Ben Sira).
